Pet Allergy
A patient suffering from a pet allergy can react after direct animal contact. However, the mere contact with the animal owner or staying in rooms and households in which the animal lives can also trigger an allergic reaction. The animal allergens can stem from animal dander, saliva or urine. They have contact to the skin, eyes or airways and can thusly lead to different symptoms.
The most common allergies are to cats and dogs. However there can be allergies to guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, mice and rats as well as to birds, horses and cows. A quite common allergen is the red mosquito larvae in fish food.
The idea of having a pet allergy usually sets off emotions, in either the family or at the workplace, even before any allergy evaluation has taken place. This makes personal and competent consultation and evaluation even more important.
