House Dust Mite Allergy
House dust mites are tiny harmless arachnids, who thrive in a humid warm climate and feed off human and animal dander. They therefore find their ideal place in mattresses, upholstered furniture, stuffed animals and carpets. If someone has an allergic reaction to house dust mites, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing or shortness of breath are common symptoms during the night or in the early morning. Due to the diminished sleep quality tiredness during the day is also possible. However, a house dust mite allergy could manifest itself only with asthmatic symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath during physical exercise. If an allergy test confirms a house dust mite allergy, steps to reduce the allergen exposure mainly in the household and a possible immunotherapy will be discussed.
