Insect Venom Allergy (Bee and Wasp Venom Allergy)
An allergic reaction to a bee or wasp sting ranges from a painful swelling extending from the sting site over to the surrounding area lasting for several days (severe local reaction) to urticaria, mucosal swelling, shortness of breath and dizziness. Severe reactions could even lead to an allergic shock.Aside from a careful history, skin tests are carried out and blood is drawn, in small children with the parent’s assistance. Therapy consists of informing about individual behavior rules, a decision about treatment with an immunotherapy and instructions for emergency medications. An allergy pass will be issued.
There is a close cooperationwith the Allergy Unit at the University Hospital Inselspital and for immunotherapies for younger children with the pediatric allergologist Dr. Peter Eng at the Kantonsspital Luzern and Aarau.
