Vertigo and Menière’s Disease
Vertigo is a very common and wide spread symptom and can have a number of causes in various organ systems. Dizziness as a symptom of a disease of the vestibular organ in the inner ear usually has its own distinct symptoms and is often harmless but annoying. The recommended assessment by a specialist consists of a thorough consultation with functional tests of various inner ear functions. These in turn will either indicate or eliminate an inner ear disturbance and therefore make it possible to determine further actions.
In cases of benign positional vertigo in all of its various forms, a fast improvement can be achieved by certain repositional maneuvers which can be done immediately. In many cases the symptoms subside completely.
For other forms of vestibular diseases such as Menière’s disease, there are medication therapies. In rare cases surgical options must be considered.
