Swallowing difficulties can arise from localized or general causes. An exact description of the symptoms and a clinical and endoscopic evaluation of the mouth and pharynx will help to find or exclude possible causes. Often further examinations are necessary.

Localized causes such as benign pharyngeal pouches (Zenker’s diverticula) can be treated in most cases with endoscopic surgery.
