Food Allergy and Oral Allergy Syndrome

As the immune and digestion systems of younger children are not yet fully developed, they can suffer from food allergies. Food allergies in older children and adults are usually the result of cross reactivities between pollen and food.

Younger children commonly react to cow milk, egg, peanuts, fish and soy. Adults react more to stone fruit, nuts, celery, carrots and fish.

Oral Allergy Syndrome is when the symptoms in patients with hay fever are limited to the mouth and throat (itching, blisters, canker sores). The same fruit is often tolerated if cooked or peeled.

In cases of severe food allergies the symptoms can not only be digestive system disorders such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea but also urticaria, swellings, shortness of breath and dizziness. In the most severe cases a shock reaction can follow.

Medical evaluation helps to identify and avoid the triggering allergen. In addition to nutritional advice and depending on the severity of the allergy, emergency medications and an allergy pass will be issued. Unnecessary diets can be avoided.
